Review of Quanta Image Sensors for Ultralow-Light Imaging

نویسندگان

چکیده

The quanta image sensor (QIS) is a photon-counting that has been implemented using different electron devices, including impact ionization-gain such as the single-photon avalanche detectors (SPADs), and low-capacitance, high conversion-gain modified CMOS sensors (CIS) with deep subelectron read noise and/or low readout signal chains. This article primarily focuses on CIS QIS, but recent progress of both types addressed. Signal processing progress, denoising, critical to improving apparent signal-to-noise ratio, also reviewed an enabling coinnovation.

Early Research Progress on Quanta Image Sensors

Early research progress in the realization of the Quanta Image Sensor is reported. Simulation of binary data acquisition and image formation was performed. Initial analysis and simulation of a readout signal chain has been performed and bounds on power dissipation established. Photodetector device concepts have been explored using TCAD.

TCAD Modeling of Devices for Quanta Image Sensors

The Quanta Image Sensor (QIS) is a possible 3 generation image sensor. A QIS consists of a large array of photodetectors (perhaps a billion) that are capable of sensing a single photoelectron with high SNR. Such a binary output photodetector is called a “jot”. It requires small size (e.g. 500 nm pitch), high quantum efficiency, and very low readout noise (e.g. <0.2 electrons rms). A key require...

Low-power readout circuit for quanta image sensors

Introduction: The ‘quanta image sensor (QIS)’ is being explored as a possible next-generation solid-state imaging technology to address issues with ‘sub-diffraction-limit (SDL)’ pixel sizes in the ‘CMOS image sensor (CIS)’ [1–3]. In the QIS concept, individual photoelectrons are counted by specialised SDL pixels termed ‘jots’, and the output of each jot is binary in nature. In addition to spati...

Images from Bits: Non-Iterative Image Reconstruction for Quanta Image Sensors

A quanta image sensor (QIS) is a class of single-photon imaging devices that measure light intensity using oversampled binary observations. Because of the stochastic nature of the photon arrivals, data acquired by QIS is a massive stream of random binary bits. The goal of image reconstruction is to recover the underlying image from these bits. In this paper, we present a non-iterative image rec...

Review of CMOS image sensors

The role of CMOS Image Sensors since their birth around the 1960s, has been changing a lot. Unlike the past, current CMOS Image Sensors are becoming competitive with regard to Charged Couple Device (CCD) technology. They offer many advantages with respect to CCD, such as lower power consumption, lower voltage operation, on-chip functionality and lower cost. Nevertheless, they are still too nois...
